Tundra Ponds

I love tundra ponds in the fall. The colors and forms create a presence I can't resist. However, I find it difficult to convey the presence of the forms and colors in the landscape without specific references to local color, form and shape. I think this distracts from the content of the painting.

So I'm trying it again. This painting comes from a beaver pond area on the west side of the Rockies about 75 miles east of Prince George, B.C. I'm sure I'll be visiting this area again.

Once again, I go back to the well, this time to devil's club on Douglas Island, Alaska. This one features the relationship between the devils club and spruce trees.

Oil from City of Rocks, Idaho

My endless fascination of the interaction between trees and rocks continues with this painting of a tree between a split rock. I'm a little hesitant to use color only in suggest interaction because I believe form is better and because color can only be seen in color and not black and white. I believe a painting should be as successful in black and white as it is in color.
Composition is tricky with this subject because of the centering of the tree. Putting the tree off center would make a better painting, but my objective is not to make good paintings but to show the presence of nature in a visually satisfying way.
